message: My Father, John Leonard, served in the Tank Company 33rd Infantry Regiment in the Canal Zone. I have a picture of the whole Company taken December 16, 1954. All the guys in this picture look like they had a pretty good time. After leaving the service my Dad married my Mom in 1958 and had five children. He worked for the U.S. Post Office for thirty three years and retired as Post Master of Folsom, PA. He passed away November 18, 2012. My Father loved his country and felt honored to have served.

My dad worked up at the clinic and we lived right at the bottom of the clinic hill first house on the left,his name is Marty Martinez and I'm Vincent Martinez his son, sooo many awesome memories from Panama where do I even begin..I think I was the only kid on base with a Go-Cart :) Stephen Higgs was a friend so was the Webbs who lived next door to us they were from Vegas I think ya my friends name was Shawn Webb, then Tim and Anthony and their sister who sometimes had seizures lived I think a couple doors up,we used to climb to the "Beacon" everyday almost God we rode our bikes all over that base and I think we covered every inch of that jungle while playing. I was also the only 10 year old kid who ran thru Howard pool naked on a dare lol.We rode that bmx track and played in the flood waters fished Lake Gatun and walked the streets of downtown Panama, it's one place I'll never forget as long as I live, I consider Panama my second home :) My dad Marty Martinez retired to Vegas and had another kid my little sister who is 19 and we are all in Vegas doing just fine but I miss and have missed Panama for a long time. I hope I get to go back and it would be cool if I met up with some of my old friends from there. I'll post some pics in here shortly. See ya

Message: In 1942 after most dependents had been returned to their stateside homes, there were 12 or 13 married couples where the wives were Canal Zone residents. We were all moved into the nice new quarters at Ft. Kobbe/Howard Field. I was one of those wives. We were there until August of 1943 when my husband was reassigned to stateside. I am BHS 1939, CZJC 1941.

Message: My family lived at Ft. Kobbe from 1959 to 1964. I attended an elementary school there from Kindergarten to third grade. I remember my kindergarten teachers name was Mrs. Davis. My best friend was Emily Best. We lived on Elwood Ave and also on Mitchem Street. My youngest brother was born there. Dear Jack,

We lived on Kobbe/Howard from 1963-64 and I attended Kobbe Elementary during 6th grade. Two things after all these years still dog my memories:

First, the history or whereabouts of my 6th grade teacher, the one and only Jane Wooden. I found an e-mail address for her -- janer@sd.znet.com -- but if Jane is still bouncing around the planet, she must be in her late eighties or even beyond. Any word about her? She was something else.

Second, during that year (63-64) we devised a class project: a 4-ft x 8-ft mosaic of the Isthmus. Our class worked o this darned near the entire year and it was to have had a place of honor somewhere on the ground floor of the school. My family returned to CONUS in May, 1964, then were restationed in Panama from 1967 until I left for college in Boston in 1969. (My folks remained in Panama until 1973). I never ventured over the bridge during our second tour there, so I lost track of the school and the mosaic we had designed and built. Any idea what became of it? (Sure hope it didn't end up in a dumpster somewhere).

I lived across the street from the church, then moved to Ft Clayton for my 6th grade class. I was on the Kobbe elementary track team and the coach was Mr. Reyes. I attended BHS for my 10th grade and left stateside during the summer '69. I returned to Panama in 1973 and was stationed at Ft Clayton. My oldest daughter was born in Gorgas. I was aged 7 to 9 years old and have fond memories (even found our house in one of the pics) of exploring and playing on and around 'beacon hill'. Still remember a boyhood friend, Ollie Brown, next door neighbor and the Hagar family and a few other families. Remember looking down the hill to see the pool and theatre, etc. Watching 'The Longest Day' when it premiered.

that was a great time growing up in the jungle, all the accident's on the road coming into the base by our house(base housing) building go carts to survive the down hill run and strong enough to make the first corner...LOL not to mention all the forst we had in the jungle ( that we weren't supposed to go into) one of the worst memories was swiming at kobbe beach, getting stung by jelly fish, and life guard blowing the whistle to get out of the water(sharks)....and then JAWS came out....don;t think i ever went back into that water again. well anyways it was a great part of my live growing up there, boyscouts, baseball, and trips with moms girlscouts camping trips. Just a note for people wo remember

Message: I lived at Ft. Kobbe down by the beach at the foot of Kobbe Hill. Only 2 wooden built houses there at the time. 1948-1952. We left there just before Chirstmas 1952 to return to the frozen north. Such great memories of old friends (Dwayne Manley lived in the other house across from us). We were literally in the jungle! All kinds of critters, sloths, snakes, armidillos.....wild kittens I rescued....Dwaynes horse and her foal we pulled out of a pit the foal fell into behind his house in jungle.. Lived at the swimming pool and movies - old theater and the new which was just built before we left. The teen club, PX pin ball machines and great ice cream sodas.
Roller skating in the hangers....and on the air strip.... and the boxing matches held in hangers that I attended with my fatheer. Wish I could go back.

Personally, during my school years I was not outside of Conus, though I have a number of friends who were in PR and are involved in reunions of Army brats. BTW, regarding William A Kobbé himself. He was 22 years old in 1862 when he enlisted as a private in Company K, 7th New York Volunteer Infantry. He was not a drummer boy. In 1863 he mustered into the NY 178th Volunteer Infantry as an officer. I personally own a document signed by him in November 1865 when he was a captain and Aid-de-camp to General Henry Davies in Montgomery, AL after the Civil War. Hope your site attracts many former brats and personnel that served at Fort Kobbé

Does anyone have any connection to what was being sprayed to kill the Mosquitoes? There are a lot of people with health issues that were stationed in the CZ. Unfortunately you can't get any benefits without solid evidence of what was sprayed while we lived there. Thanks

Message: I wasn't a "Kobbe Kid," but I was statoned at Ft. Kobbe for awhile in 1962 and 1963. Went through the Jungle Operations Training Center, and spent some time in the bush during late 1962 and early 1963. Was brought in and assigned to Headquarters & Headquarters Co. as an Asst. S-2 NCO. (Really a glorified clerk-typist). I dropped out of high school and joined the Army at 17, so I was 18 or 19 during that time, not much older than some of the high school military dependents that I guess were "Kobbe Kids." It was a great place to serve, after they brought me in out of the bush. Good memories. Sad that it is all gone, but I'm glad to see that someone remembers.

Also reading comic books at the PX, playing the pinball machines there, and the songs on the juke box. Delivered papers up Commissary Hill, ran behind the DDT spray trucks w gas mask on, recall the grass curling up as you walked across it, the little flexible gourds growing on trees and full of fluid that could be squirted out when the tip was pinched, the shark net at the beach, and so much more...

Hi! Are you still managing the Kobbe Kids website? I haven't thought about my life at Ft. Kobbe until recently, and, feeling nostalgic, decided to look around on the web today. I was taken in by Gary Strong's photos of Kobbe and, while his photos pre-date my time there, they captured my attention and recalled an amazing life and unique experience like no other.
We lived on Kobbe Hill from June 1971 through mid-1973 or 1974. We then moved to Ft. Amador until June 1976. My father was a GS-level DoD employee. My two brothers are Mike and Tony. Our neighbors were the Gunther's, the Jackson's, the Morgan's, the Huffcut's, the Mosquez', the Totaro's and many other great folks whose faces I remember, but not their names! Me and my brother Tony attended Kobbe elementary - me for just one year, the 6th grade, and Tony for the 5th and 6th grades. I graduated from Curundu Junior High School and attended Balboa High School for one year. My brother, Mike, attended Curundu Junior High School and is a graduate of Balboa High School. He played football on the Balboa Bulldogs team his Junior & Senior years.
My father was President and Treasurer of the local Lions Club and my mother was active in the Officer's Wives Club. I played folk guitar and sang, and performed on stage at Curundu. I was also in the orchestra playing violin (2nd chair) at Curundu for two years and then joined the choir (under Mr. Chapman). I ran track for Kobbe and Curundu. I vied for the title of Miss Canal Zone in the 1974 (I think) Miss Teen America Pageant against one other gal who got the title and represented the Canal Zone in the stateside contest. I was a cheerleader for the Howard Eagles football team for at least one year and had many friends on Howard including Susan Shipman, Terry Haggerty, Karen Spurlock, Chuck Gammons, and others.
I do have photos from the period I would like to post of Kobbe, Ft. Amador, Panama, etc. If you have any references to the names I've mentioned here, or know of anyone who lived on Kobbe Hill during the period I did, I would appreciate their contact information. Thanks so much for your site!

I do remember the Spanish teacher, the shark net, elementary school, the airport, the bridge that raised up to let the ships go underneath, the hospital, the commissary that had the daycare (tent) in the parking lot & even the girl scouts selling cookies in front, the canal zone, the rain, ginnups, mangos, our banana tree in our back yard, the piñatas, movie theater.. ..do you remember the carnivals? It seems there was a carnival all the time somewhere. OMG, how old do I feel right now! I traveled many places being an army brat; I can actually say that Panama was the most beautiful place I had ever lived. Thank you for letting me have some great memories!

Thanks you for your interest. The topic, "Are you a Zonian?" has been debated many times by many people for many years. I was there in the early 60's and was high school age, but I have no idea if you will know the people that I will mention.
The last time I was involved in this discussion, was approximately 14 years ago. I live in California, and Lesley Hendricks of CZ Brats, who lives on the east coast, for some reason were both up all night long. For many hours, to both of our enjoyment, she and I wrote back and forth regarding this topic. We finally decided to let Dino Barkema make the decision. Dino is our age, still lives in Panama and is very well respected. His simple response was, If you feel like a Zonian, you are a Zonian.
Obviously, everyone, including you and I, are allowed to have their own opinions. Just because he said it, dosen't make it so, but I agree with Dino completely. And no, that doesn't mean that I win you loose. It only means that we both are entitled to our own feelings and our own hearts. Please keep in mind, that just because I feel that I am a Zonian, it doesn't take anything away from you. They are my feelings and I am forcing them on no one.
I am sorry that this topic is one that seems to concern you to the point that you feel you have to write about it. I also hope that my explanation helps you to understand that each of has our own heart and we are the only one that has any say about what is in it.

By the way, did you know that the Gov. of the Canal Zone was a U.S. Army General. I wonder if he felt he was a Zonian.

Howard. This really was early days. It seemed very unused
and I remember
being able to roll greenish-black mold off the window
screens. We had 'honey
bears' running in and out of the jungle too.
Yes, add me to the list!  I was Joan Peters back then. I
believe we got there
in 1954, but it must have been a year or two later that I
was at Fort Kobbe,
lets say 1955-57. I only remember the bus rides and looking
for sharks in the
water (?). I most remember having ant lions in a wood
pencil box and lifting
the desk top to check on them. I remember we had 30 minutes
a day of Spanish
lessons that I'm afraid didn't stick with me.

Actually, Fort Kobbe is on the Pacific side and Kobbe and
Howard were the
same base. Albrook is also on the Pacific side, but you did
have to cross the
bridge at the Miraflores locks to go from Kobbe/Howard to
Albrook. I can't
say for sure, but I believe Howard was called France Field
in the earlier
years. I went back last October and have attached my report
from that trip.

Hello Jack,
I've been browsing for pictures of the Canal Zone the
past couple of days and came across the Kobbe Kids. I was in Panama with my family back in
1954-57. I was only 8-9-10-ish when we were there, so I've been looking to validate my
identification of slides my late dad took that I just had printed and am
putting in an album. He was a Master Sargent in the Air Force.
We first came to the CZ on the Pacific side and lived at a place we
called "France Field". We were non-coms, but got to live in officers quarters. It
was sparcely settled around us and the jungle was not that far from the back
of the house. I don't find anything about France Field in Google. Do you have
any idea if that was actually part of Howard AFB? After a year or so we moved to the Atlantic side to Albrook AFB.
On the Pacific side I went to South Margarita; on the Atlantic I rode the bus across the canal to Fort Kobbe.
I'm just curious what you think about France Field.

I am reporting a sighting of 2 of your missing Kobbe Kids! As a matter fact, I know the whole family! I was fortunate to marry the man of my dreams and He is Jimmy Pecor. Actually I know him by the name of Jim! Jim and I live in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. The Pecor family was at Fort Kobbe in 1957 to 1961. Their parents are Leonard and Manuela Pecor. Leonard passed away 9 years ago. Manuela is still living in Oconto, WI where the family moved after leaving Panama and she will celebrate her 86th birthday next week. John Pecor lives in Durango, CO. and he is married to Sandra and has three kids. He works for the Bureau of Land Management. I emailed John also and gave him the Kobbe Kids website. Jim was a Senior Mechanical Designer for over 30 years, retired and now is enjoying life as an Over the Road Trucker. He is having a ball and loves seeing the country. I just happened to check out some friends of mine who moved to Panama and happened across your website when I googled Fort Kobbe. Boy, I really enjoyed it! Thanks so much for maintaining this wonderful memory. Jim has said over and over again that those were the best years of his life....still
hates winter and sleeps with a quilt on in the summer.      He was one of the few Pecor kids that was born in Panama in 1947. Since he was born in July....says that he was acclimated at
birth and should never have left the tropics!  I would love to hear about another reunion. Please keep me on your email list. Thanks so much!

When we left Kobbe, my dad was stationed at Norfolk , Virginia . We live in Virginia Beach and have been here since living Kobbe.
I lived on Kobbe hill (right above hole #7) on the golf course. We were the only Navy family to have lived on Kobbe. I believe it was Vargas Street or Lane.
Do have a question. I went to Diablo Jr. High. I only see one other person who has it listed. By any chance, do you know when they closed Diablo?

Subject: Kobbe Elementary School

Our family lived in Farfan and I attended Kobbe Elementary for 6th grade in 1964-65. Then I went to Curundu for the next two years before we moved to California.

For our 25th anniversary my husband took me on a Panama Canal cruise and I saw many familiar sites. We only got off the ship in Cristobal so I didn't get to nose around the old homestead but at least I was close!
