message: I was in the Army and stationed at Ft Kobbe from Oct '76 - Oct '78 and have fond memories hanging with the "Zonies" (as we referred to you guys) at Kobbe Beach, the parade grounds behind the barracks and the pool. I'll have to dig up some pics I have and post them! We weren't officially allowed to fraternize with you but at 18 I was just a kid myself and nobody really seemed to care. I remember telling stories about the "real world" and how we couldn't wait to go back. We didn't realize how special the time was in the 'Zone...

Message: Subject: Old Kobbe Elem student has a question

Dear Jack,

We lived on Kobbe/Howard from 1963-64 and I attended Kobbe Elementary during 6th grade. Two things after all these years still dog my memories:

First, the history or whereabouts of my 6th grade teacher, the one and only Jane Wooden. I found an e-mail address for her -- janer@sd.znet.com -- but if Jane is still bouncing around the planet, she must be in her late eighties or even beyond. Any word about her? She was something else.

Second, during that year (63-64) we devised a class project: a 4-ft x 8-ft mosaic of the Isthmus. Our class worked o this darned near the entire year and it was to have had a place of honor somewhere on the ground floor of the school. My family returned to CONUS in May, 1964, then were restationed in Panama from 1967 until I left for college in Boston in 1969. (My folks remained in Panama until 1973). I never ventured over the bridge during our second tour there, so I lost track of the school and the mosaic we had designed and built. Any idea what became of it? (Sure hope it didn't end up in a dumpster somewhere).

Thanks in advance for any tidbits you might provide this long-ago CZ-Brat.

Yours,

Mike Hassell

that was a great time growing up in the jungle, all the accident's on the road coming into the base by our house(base housing) building go carts to survive the down hill run and strong enough to make the first corner...LOL not to mention all the forst we had in the jungle ( that we weren't supposed to go into) one of the worst memories was swiming at kobbe beach, getting stung by jelly fish, and life guard blowing the whistle to get out of the water(sharks)....and then JAWS came out....don;t think i ever went back into that water again. well anyways it was a great part of my live growing up there, boyscouts, baseball, and trips with moms girlscouts camping trips. We left there just before Chirstmas 1952 to return to the frozen north. Such great memories of old friends (Dwayne Manley lived in the other house across from us). We were literally in the jungle! All kinds of critters, sloths, snakes, armidillos.....wild kittens I rescued....Dwaynes horse and her foal we pulled out of a pit the foal fell into behind his house in jungle.. Lived at the swimming pool and movies - old theater and the new which was just built before we left. The teen club, PX pin ball machines and great ice cream sodas.
Roller skating in the hangers....and on the air strip.... and the boxing matches held in hangers that I attended with my fatheer. Wish I could go back.

Subject: Kobbe Kid, 1971 -1974

Dear Jack,
Hi! Are you still managing the Kobbe Kids website? I haven't thought about my life at Ft. Kobbe until recently, and, feeling nostalgic, decided to look around on the web today. I was taken in by Gary Strong's photos of Kobbe and, while his photos pre-date my time there, they captured my attention and recalled an amazing life and unique experience like no other.
We lived on Kobbe Hill from June 1971 through mid-1973 or 1974. We then moved to Ft. Amador until June 1976. My father was a GS-level DoD employee. My two brothers are Mike and Tony. Our neighbors were the Gunther's, the Jackson's, the Morgan's, the Huffcut's, the Mosquez', the Totaro's and many other great folks whose faces I remember, but not their names! Me and my brother Tony attended Kobbe elementary - me for just one year, the 6th grade, and Tony for the 5th and 6th grades. I graduated from Curundu Junior High School and attended Balboa High School for one year. My brother, Mike, attended Curundu Junior High School and is a graduate of Balboa High School. He played football on the Balboa Bulldogs team his Junior & Senior years.
My father was President and Treasurer of the local Lions Club and my mother was active in the Officer's Wives Club. I played folk guitar and sang, and performed on stage at Curundu. I was also in the orchestra playing violin (2nd chair) at Curundu for two years and then joined the choir (under Mr. Chapman). I ran track for Kobbe and Curundu. I vied for the title of Miss Canal Zone in the 1974 (I think) Miss Teen America Pageant against one other gal who got the title and represented the Canal Zone in the stateside contest. I was a cheerleader for the Howard Eagles football team for at least one year and had many friends on Howard including Susan Shipman, Terry Haggerty, Karen Spurlock, Chuck Gammons, and others.
I do have photos from the period I would like to post of Kobbe, Ft. Amador, Panama, etc. If you have any references to the names I've mentioned here, or know of anyone who lived on Kobbe Hill during the period I did, I would appreciate their contact information. Thanks so much for your site!

I do remember the Spanish teacher, the shark net, elementary school, the airport, the bridge that raised up to let the ships go underneath, the hospital, the commissary that had the daycare (tent) in the parking lot & even the girl scouts selling cookies in front, the canal zone, the rain, ginnups, mangos, our banana tree in our back yard, the piñatas, movie theater.. ..do you remember the carnivals? It seems there was a carnival all the time somewhere. OMG, how old do I feel right now! Thanks you for your interest. The topic, "Are you a Zonian?" has been debated many times by many people for many years. I was there in the early 60's and was high school age, but I have no idea if you will know the people that I will mention.
The last time I was involved in this discussion, was approximately 14 years ago. I live in California, and Lesley Hendricks of CZ Brats, who lives on the east coast, for some reason were both up all night long. For many hours, to both of our enjoyment, she and I wrote back and forth regarding this topic. We finally decided to let Dino Barkema make the decision. Dino is our age, still lives in Panama and is very well respected. His simple response was, If you feel like a Zonian, you are a Zonian.
Obviously, everyone, including you and I, are allowed to have their own opinions. Just because he said it, dosen't make it so, but I agree with Dino completely. And no, that doesn't mean that I win you loose. It only means that we both are entitled to our own feelings and our own hearts. Please keep in mind, that just because I feel that I am a Zonian, it doesn't take anything away from you. They are my feelings and I am forcing them on no one.
I am sorry that this topic is one that seems to concern you to the point that you feel you have to write about it. I also hope that my explanation helps you to understand that each of has our own heart and we are the only one that has any say about what is in it.

By the way, did you know that the Gov. of the Canal Zone was a U.S. Army General. I wonder if he felt he was a Zonian.
Respectfully,

Jack Frediani

My goodness!  I need to digest where places were. Obviously
my pre-teen sense
of direction was 'flawed'. My work PC won't let
me watch this so I'll send it
home to enjoy and read your report. I'll do more
research on-line too about
Howard. This really was early days. It seemed very unused
and I remember
being able to roll greenish-black mold off the window
screens. We had 'honey
bears' running in and out of the jungle too.
Yes, add me to the list!  I was Joan Peters back then. I
believe we got there
in 1954, but it must have been a year or two later that I
was at Fort Kobbe,
lets say 1955-57. I only remember the bus rides and looking
for sharks in the
water (?). I most remember having ant lions in a wood
pencil box and lifting
the desk top to check on them. I remember we had 30 minutes
a day of Spanish
lessons that I'm afraid didn't stick with me.
Thank you so much for your reply and help with my memory!

Actually, Fort Kobbe is on the Pacific side and Kobbe and
Howard were the
same base. Albrook is also on the Pacific side, but you did
have to cross the
bridge at the Miraflores locks to go from Kobbe/Howard to
Albrook. I can't
say for sure, but I believe Howard was called France Field
in the earlier
years. I went back last October and have attached my report
from that trip.
Also, here is a link to the pictures.

Also, if you wish, let me know your name at the time you
were there and I
will have you added to the list.

Hello Jack,
I've been browsing for pictures of the Canal Zone the
past couple of days and came across the Kobbe Kids. I was in Panama with my family back in
1954-57. I was only 8-9-10-ish when we were there, so I've been looking to validate my
identification of slides my late dad took that I just had printed and am
putting in an album. He was a Master Sargent in the Air Force.
We first came to the CZ on the Pacific side and lived at a place we
called "France Field". We were non-coms, but got to live in officers quarters. It
was sparcely settled around us and the jungle was not that far from the back
of the house. I don't find anything about France Field in Google. Do you have
any idea if that was actually part of Howard AFB? After a year or so we moved to the Atlantic side to Albrook AFB.
On the Pacific side I went to South Margarita; on the Atlantic I rode the bus across the canal to Fort Kobbe.
I'm just curious what you think about France Field.
Thanks for any enlightenment!

I am reporting a sighting of 2 of your missing Kobbe Kids! As a matter fact, I know the whole family! I was fortunate to marry the man of my dreams and He is Jimmy Pecor. Actually I know him by the name of Jim! Jim and I live in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. The Pecor family was at Fort Kobbe in 1957 to 1961. Their parents are Leonard and Manuela Pecor. Leonard passed away 9 years ago. Manuela is still living in Oconto, WI where the family moved after leaving Panama and she will celebrate her 86th birthday next week. John Pecor lives in Durango, CO. and he is married to Sandra and has three kids. He works for the Bureau of Land Management. I emailed John also and gave him the Kobbe Kids website. Jim was a Senior Mechanical Designer for over 30 years, retired and now is enjoying life as an Over the Road Trucker. He is having a ball and loves seeing the country. I just happened to check out some friends of mine who moved to Panama and happened across your website when I googled Fort Kobbe. Boy, I really enjoyed it! Thanks so much for maintaining this wonderful memory. Jim has said over and over again that those were the best years of his life....still
hates winter and sleeps with a quilt on in the summer.      He was one of the few Pecor kids that was born in Panama in 1947. Since he was born in July....says that he was acclimated at
birth and should never have left the tropics!  I would love to hear about another reunion. Please keep me on your email list. Thanks so much!

Subject:   Kobbe Kids Web Site

Sandy,
I wandered on to the Kobbe Kids web site and am wondering how I can get my name listed on the site. Lived on Kobbe Hill from 1968-1970 while I attended 9th grade at Curundu and 10th grade at Balboa. Left after sophomore year and have lost touch with all of my friends from way back then. Would like to list contact info in case any of them wander by the site. Specifically looking for Brian Compton and Ron Mahan who were my closest biddies on the hill and Jon Dunham who was another friend who lived at Howard.
Appreciate any assistance you can give me to get listed on the site or any other ideas you might have about how I can find my old friends. Thx.

Hi Jack,
Always enjoy going back to visit your Kobbe Kids site. Someday I hope to visit Kobbe and see all the changes in person. I am already on the list but do not have an email listed. If possible, I would like to put it on. weirichinteriordesign@cox.net
When we left Kobbe, my dad was stationed at Norfolk , Virginia . We live in Virginia Beach and have been here since living Kobbe.
I lived on Kobbe hill (right above hole #7) on the golf course. We were the only Navy family to have lived on Kobbe. I believe it was Vargas Street or Lane.
Do have a question. I went to Diablo Jr. High. I only see one other person who has it listed. By any chance, do you know when they closed Diablo?
Thanks

Subject: Kobbe Elementary School

Our family lived in Farfan and I attended Kobbe Elementary for 6th grade in 1964-65. Then I went to Curundu for the next two years before we moved to California.

For our 25th anniversary my husband took me on a Panama Canal cruise and I saw many familiar sites. We only got off the ship in Cristobal so I didn't get to nose around the old homestead but at least I was close!

Lived on Ft Kobbe 1951-1952 (3rd and 4th Grades).  Three years ago, I was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease and I am convinced that there is some connection with the DDT spraying that went on at the base every evening when we were outside playing in the streets. I remember all of us kids chasing behind the trucks as they drove through the base. IS there anyone else  out there in this predicament?  My neurologist is interested in doing a longitudinal study to see if there is any correlation.  Thanks to anyone that can help me.

MG William August Kobbe was my great-grandfather.  My dad is the only family member who was able

to visit Fort Kobbe.  The closest I ever got was a best friend in high school (in the 60's!) who had lived

at Fort Kobbe! It seems that my brother and I have lost our chance to ever see Fort Kobbe as it was.

Christine Kobbe Allin

This site brought back so many memories for me. I lived on Ft. Kobbe from

1991 till 1992. It was an amazing experience which I will never forget.

Ya'll Have done a great job with the site and I look foward to visiting it

many times in the future.

Amanda Ballard

It brought back a lot of memories for me and I havent been in Panamain over 22 years.

We spent some time in a part of Ft. Kobbe that eventually was condemned, it was for

incoming Air Force persons, I think. I explained to my two sons what

the shark cage was for, NO it was to keep the sharks out not in.

Tim McDonald

This site is great! I can actually see my house in one of the pictures. My family was one of the first Air

Force families to move to Kobbe. I was there from 1961-1964. What wonderful memories.

Terri Lockhart Muha

I grew up in Panama and lived at both Albrook and Howard AFB.

I was there from birth in 1973 till leaving in 1989. I played football in 9th grade for the Kobbe Raiders.

Joe Cassidy

Lived A Howard AFB from 79-82.  Loved it!!   I was on the school board at Fort Kobbe.

Jerilyn Alf

I am not a Kobbe Kid but I do envy you. I was in the Army at Kobbe from 1958 until 1960,

and as you can see by my user name I haven't fotgotten. Coming from a big city,

I thought that Kobbe was heaven. You were very privileged to grow up there.

Tom Joyce

I was at Howard AFB from 91-93 and before that I lived on Amador for a year.  It has been so amazingly difficult to ever discuss anything about my tour there. I was living there within weeks after Just Cause and as you well know, there were tensions between EVERYONE down there at that time. That made things just a touch more "savage" in my transition there. I would love to see if I might not be able to find some of my friends.......time to dig up the old year books.  Anyone who lived there and came back to the United States knows that any legnth of time in Panama had a profound impact on all of our lives. I am just glad to have found a place where I can visit in my private time and reflect on my life when I was there. Thank You!

Emily Anne Reynolds

You were a privileged group to have the opportunity to live in such a wonderful environment.  I was born and raised in the Canal Zone, joined the Air Force in 1975, was stationed at Howard AFB 82-88 and 95-99.  Retired 1999, Howard AFB.  The CZ was one of the best places in the world to live, work and bring up a family!

Javier Soriano

I moved to Panama 2 years after I was born in 1986 and moved back to the
U.S. in 1990. Then I moved back to Panama in 1995 and and then moved back to
the U.S. in 1998.  I lived on Howard AFB for 8 years total.  I used to
live near the clinic in a 4 bedroom house, I think my house number was 184. I will turn 16 on November 13th. Thanks a lot for having such a cool site guys, it brings back old
memories.

Evan Wagner

Very nostalgic.  I spent 3 tours there in the AF.  77 to 79 when Carter
signed the new treaties, 86 to 90 when we sent Noriega on vacation and 95
thru 99.  I left early, in Jan 99 just before it got too depressing.  Have
you seen what the locals did to the housing at albrook? They renovated many
of them and they are now very nice.

Bill Wagner

I was stationioned at Fort Kobbe c/company weapons platoon m 60 machine gun

and 90 mm recoilless rifle from about august 1966 thru about august 1967.  Welcome home all my bros

and may [god] bless you and your family now and forever [amen] from my family to yours.

Great Site.   Keep it coming...Airborne all the way

Calvin Hickerson

What a  great look into the past!  My absolute favorite was the pic of ginnups!  They had to be my most favorite fruit!  We were stationed at Albrook but I remember all the great trips our family took on weekends. The shark net sure brought back memories too.  I would love to here from anyone who remembers me or my family.  We lived at Albrook and also in Pannama City.   I must have been 8-9yrs old at the time, I'm 45yrs now.  I was on a swim team  at Albrook.  I can't remember the name of my school,  but I remember a few teachers. Ms DeLaPina and Ms Faucet > must have been my 3rd or 4th grade teachers.  I also remember the Balboa club house in Balboa. We lived at Albrook during the riots and had a few families stay with us during the uprise.

Henrietta Rose Cabrera/Heldt

What a wonderful site!  You have really brought back some great memories
for a kid born and raised in my beloved Canal Zone.  Special thanks to Gary
Strong for having the foresight to take all those beautiful pictures and for
his generosity in sharing them!  Thank you and keep up the good work!  Wish
we had a site like this for the town of Margarita.

Joe Hickey

Thanks for all the memories. I finally have a picture to go with my
description of "Guinnups". They are so difficult to explain to Non-zonians.
I told my sister about this site, she will be visiting soon.  I lived on Howard AFB from 1970-1976. I attended Curundu JHS 1974, 1975 and 1976. (7th-9th grade) If anyone would like to contact me, please do so at:

 Thanks, Denise Mousaw

I lived on Kobbe Hill house 301 around the age of 9 to 14.  I LOVED IT!  Kobbe is dreamland.  I havent been back in 10 years.  Im 24 now,  and i dream of riding my skateboard down kobbe hill on my way to kobbe flats to visit my freinds.  I still remeber my phone number!  Somethings you never forget.  Kobbe kids Rule!  Kobbe Raiders Rule. Kobbe Elementry Rules...they say!  That heaven is more beautiful then your dreams! Well it better be beautiful if it plans to top FT KOBBE. who knows.. maybe it is ft Kobbe.  A land of Grass Fields!

Pablo Manuel Vangas "slinky"

Having lived at Howard from '66 to '69 I could easily see thru the lens of Gary Strong's camera. Wow! Thanks, Gary. Great work. Great eye. I just wish I would have had the maturity and perspective at 16 to have savored it with such a sense of beauty and place. The shot of the cayuco in the mangroves at Venado is special. In 66 and 67, I was one of the Venado boys who spent countless hours surfing in the "mangies", eating fried plantains at the cantina, and munching "raspados con leche" in the village. Gary, you "speaka my language". To the creators of this site, Thank You!

Lou Nelms

I am tickled to death to find it and hope it will help me find some of the people I have been looking for for years.  I lived in Ft Kobee from 1962 to 1964 and went to Balboa High School. I was a very skinny, very shy plain jane and loved horses. I had some of the very best years of my life at Ft Kobbe.

Laura Laird Causey
